The Department of Political Science will continue to redefine itself for the demands of the 21st century by creating an enabling environment for staff and students to accomplish set goals in teaching, research and service engagements; says Head of Department, Olajire Bamisaye.
Bamisaye, a professor of Political Science, made the assertion when he led lecturers to an interactive forum with newly admitted undergraduate students of the Department on 17th May, 2019. While congratulating the students for scaling through various hurdles to secure admission into the University and Department, he admonished them to take advantage of the platform to acquire critical problem-solving skills necessary for excellence in the contemporary global polity.
Also speaking, an Associate Professor, Sunday Akindele urged the newly admitted students to avoid distractions that could impact negatively on their academic fortunes in the University. He urged them to maximise the benefits of modern technologies to enhance their learning experience. Dr. Olugbemiga Afolabi equally tasked the students to adhere strictly to the code of conduct as stipulated by the University and be disciplined as conditions for good outcomes in their studies. Other lecturers who spoke at the programme, Musilimu Aliyu, Kikelomo Mbada, Solomon Usman and Temitayo Odeyemi, all emphasised the need for the newly admitted students to attach the highest level of importance to their academic tasks and abide by extant instructions, timelines and guidelines of the University.
Earlier, the President of the National Association of Political Science Students, OAU, Malik Oladepo, a final year student, had extolled the virtues of staff in the Department and encouraged the new students to see them as mentors who could nurture them to higher realms in their professional and behavioural endeavours. The lecturers took turns to enlighten the understanding of the newly admitted students and provide clarifications to series of questions relating to the Department, academic activities and career prospects.
At the beginning of the 2018/2019 session in May, the Department welcomed students in the UTME and Direct Entry categories for the undergraduate programme as well as M.Sc Political Science, Master of Political Science and the doctoral programme for postgraduate programmes.
Meanwhile, the Department has welcomed the Faculty of Social Sciences Review Panel’s approval of its recommendations for promotions. In the Annual Staff Review for 2019 which held in April, Dr. Amaka Emordi and Mr. Temitayo Odeyemi were promoted to Lecturer I and Lecturer II, respectively. Similarly, the University’s Appointments and Promotions Committee has promoted Drs Olawale Olaopa and Damilola Agbalajobi to Senior Lecturers.
